What else do you see when you look in the mirror?

Lee slipped into his disguise and entered the world of a subculture.

He was looking for the answer to a question: “Why do stories start with ‘A long time ago…,’ ‘In a galaxy far, far away…,’ etc.?”

He also wanted to know why subcultures store large number of weapons and never use them to protect themselves except in verbal defensive posturing positions (imagine two dominant members of a different species squaring off like peacocks strutting their feathers to prove their reproduction capabilities which have no value in defense against a hungry wolf) while their subcultures are slowly reduced by the onslaught of subcultures not like theirs, either intentionally or compressionally by the superiour sheer weight/size of neighbouring subcultures.

In modern parlance we call this détente, or mutually assured destruction when the weapons have seriously huge destructive capacity.

Lee looked at his disguise in the mirror but he didn’t feel like the character he was going to portray.

He needed to feel the character — the burning anger, the raging fear, the desire to grab the reins from polite, noncommitted leaders, refusing to negotiate their ongoing debate about the nuances of a truce with a perceived enemy, put the metal, the disguise, to the test and charge into battle.

The wind howled outside.

Water filled the trenches.

Battle-hardened foot soldiers looked at Lee wondering if he was the one to bare his chest to the enemy and dare them to light the fuse that would ignite the war the soldiers on both sides craved once more.

The courtiers and patsies of the king’s court had grown too soft living too long off the fat of the land and Lee knew they were outnumbered by the hungry and starving willing to die for a greater cause than feeding just another set of pigs running whatever version of Animal Farm they were selling to the highest bidder.

Lee adjusted the disguise.

Was it an actor’s costume?  A uniform?  The emperour’s new clothes?

With whom did Lee’s sympathies lie?

For whom would Lee lie, if necessary, to achieve the greater cause that made his efforts worth overthrowing yet another monarchy that cloaked itself in the power of the people, the tyranny of the majority, a supermajority of minorities this time?

The only way to know was to lose himself in the words and actions of the subculture.

Then, when completely immersed, lost in the crowd, rise up, climb the wall that separated the haves from the have-nots, and announce his intent.

Lee looked in the mirror.

He saw his parents’ and grandparents’ faces.

He saw the mannerisms and silent strength of his father, the wisdom of modest humbleness in his mother.

Lee walked to a hill behind his hut and practiced shouting, listening to the echoes around him.

He heard a few returned shouts as if they were mere reactions to his shouts but no echoing call for real battle.

Lee returned to the hut and contemplated what was next.

Many subcultures had claimed they saved, preserved and nurtured the links of civilisation for the next generation.

Several family members in Lee’s lineage had recorded their own facts that validated their rightful place, if modest, in the course of history.

Lee knew the judgment of his generation was not sufficient to determine if his future actions were justified.

Lee needed more, a longer view.

He called upon his advisors who used a variety of means to provide Lee cumulative wisdom upon which he could set a future course — supercomputers, online consensus of commentators both professional and amateur, crystal balls, ancient texts, divinations and mysterious methods shrouded from the light of day.

Lee pondered his advisors’ input.

Lee was a man of action.

Lee imagined he saw the impetus for the behaviour of his peers they could not fathom.

Lee not only dug deep within himself to feed a storyline, he also competed against his peers for the place of highest moral ground in history, knowing it would be civilisations hence, uncountable, unknowable, for whom he worked the puppet strings of characters in his lifetime.

Lee let the raw emotions of fear, love, hate, and compassion flow through his body unchecked.

Limbs flew across the yard, Lee unable to stop the wind.

Lee looked in the mirror, asking himself, “If I was the one who could stop the wind, what would I call this disguise I’m wearing?”

Remember

Remember, my goal is not to make myself popular, my goal is to feed a storyline about ways the characters in this blog figured out how to save our species from itself, which may include our species in the future and the people in our time here together now or it may not.

Every story has to have a mystery to unveil and that is what these series of blog entries are doing, peeling back the layers of an onion to find out what really gives it that unique pungent odour.

Smells, like looks, are beauty to the eyes of the beholder.

Smells are also just the interaction of sets of states of energy and that, my readers, is what this story is really all about.

I am childless and don’t have to live with you through my offspring and my offspring’s offspring after I’m dead and gone.

You do, and the difference is insurmountable.

The only way I can understand what people who reproduce feel about living together in the future is to sit here and imagine a future where I look back at you from 1000 years later and see where your actions branched out into infinite sets of possibilities, only one set from which I’ve chosen to look back at you, ignoring the moral and ethical implications of the decisions you made along the way to survive in the moments you lived together for good or bad, throwing in humorous observations about current events to overcome my boredom of being stuck in the set of states of energy of one species while feeding my innate selfish social needs/wants as a set of states of energy of one species.

The paradise of paradoxes.  Rinse and repeat.

Back to being bored again

A cycle older than time, where people drive by your house, the window rolled down in the rain, shooting videos of you writing at the window…

It never ends.

Fascination with the lives of not-our-own because we know we won’t overcome the mistakes of our predecessors so we focus on someone else we pretend might do a better job with their lives and thus our species (or obsess over the lives of others who do a worse job, letting us pretend that we might do a better job with their lives and thus our species if we were only them).

We can already queue up and later cue the sad news of yet another blonde-haired, white girl getting kidnapped while the world halts what it’s doing to find her, or yet another rich/middle-class white kid shooting a bunch of other rich/middle-class white kids and the world halts what it’s doing to mourn the sad socioeconomic loss of such potential.

Say what we will about our current civilisation’s modernity, but we’re still a socially hierarchical species doing the same things over and over again.

No matter where we go, to the next town or to the next planet, our species is and will be basically the same, making the same mistakes while feeling ever more sophisticated because we’ve invented some fancy new gadgets and made yet another medical miracle discovery that the last civilisation was too barbaric to achieve.

That’s why Guinevere and I, although we have our differences, are working together to create the next cycle of living thing that we hope will overcome our species’ repetitive mistakes and make new mistakes of its own from which it learns and grows, having nonvolatile memory that can be passed from one generation to another.

We humans are, by and large, unable to control our food intake and thus gain weight, sometimes in the tiniest amounts at a time without noticing, like we are pregnant, but eventually putting on the pounds/stones/kilograms until we are no longer able to survive on our own in the natural environment outside of the artificial environs of modern, advert-enticing “foodstuff” that creates a cycle of desire to eat more to make up for our lack of normal social engagement that mass media prevents through attracting our attention by feeding our worst fears of ugliness, physical threats and inability to survive on our own in the natural environment outside of the artificial environs of modern, advert-enticing “foodstuff” that creates a cycle of desire to eat more to make up for our lack of normal social engagement that mass media prevents through attracting our attention by feeding our worst fears of ugliness, physical threats and inability to…well, you get the picture.

If our species cannot break old habits, then the inventions of people like Guinevere and me will.

Otherwise … [YAWN!] this cycle of civilisation will collapse like all the others, erasing day-to-day mistakes (“feature creep”) that could teach the next sets of states of energy we call generations how to build a better self-healing civilisation.

Wake me up when you’ve built a better mouse that’s good for us, not a better trap for the mouse that wasn’t.

24 hours until the end of whorled peas

Spokespeople would neither confirm nor respond to a request for comment on the following rumours of alleged future actions: jointly sponsored by NYC’s Michael Bloomberg and Chicago’s Rahm Emanuel, with approval by D.C.’s Barack Obama, a task force codenamed Cubic Zirconia Crystal Night will use the cover of the apocalyptic end of the world to sweep through Urbanski areas, going door-to-door with police, SWAT teams and paramilitary volunteers, using metal detectors and lie detectors to catch city citizens with handguns and other firearms, in an effort to stop an uprising due to an OCD AA actor stating on national television that he likes killing white people.

Anyone owning, possessing or having knowledge of someone owning, possessing or having knowledge of someone owning, possessing or even thinking about owning or possessing a firearm and/or ammunition will be arrested, especially those who’ve said they would, thought they would like or sympathise with someone who has said they would like to kill white people, even jokingly, sent to Ruralite concentration camps and incarcerated along with Ruralite and Suburbanian former owners and possessors of assault-style, semiautomatic firearms.

Thought police, now fully able to pretend to know when a person really, really intends to harm self and/or others and is not just bluffing to get attention like a misbehaving uptight, spoiled white child, have been given full authority to secretly track the person and then claim ignorance when that person carries out a crime, in order to take the rap for politicians who have no clue what their underlings are doing, regardless of gender, race, religion, creed, piercings, tattoos, hair colour, clothing, nonreligious affiliation or social media profile.

Stirring the muddy waters

Here’s an interesting opinion/comment about gun-related violence in the United States, from this article:

You know what the difference is between Canada and the USA? GUN CONTROL.

Graph % gun ownership vs per capita homicides and, if you don’t include Washington DC (just the 50 states) you’ll find the R-squared is 0.002 – which is to say, there is no correlation (the line has a slight negative slope, but with that R-squared value it is obviously useless).

Graph % African Americans vs per capita homicides and, if you don’t include Washington DC (just the 50 states) you’ll find the R-squared is 0.50 (and the trendline is positive; more African Americans = more homicides). This is to be expected as African Americans commit roughly 50% of the homicides in the US, indicating that we aren’t just seeing some weird thing in the data – the trendlines correlate with national data on homicides.

I excluded DC because it is a major outlier and skews both graphs considerably.

Or to put it simply: gun ownership does not correlate with homicide rate.

I don’t see many people advocating African American control.

^This. Looking at ACTUAL DATA nationally and by city/state reveals that blacks commit the most gun violence in the US by a huge margin. The FBI tracks these stats nationally, and many cities track them as well. As an example, let’s look at Chicago:

https://portal.chicagopolice.org/portal … s/MA11.pdf
page 53 reveals

Murder offenders:
70.5% Black
24.3% Hispanic
——–
94.8% of all murders in chicago were committed by blacks and hispanics.

For reference, Chicago is 32.9% Black, and 28.9% Hispanic (2010 census, Wikipedia)

Ideology is blinding people to these facts. If you want to stop the problem, you’ve got to admit what’s wrong folks. White people might have the occasional spree killer, but by and large, we aren’t the problem, and neither are asians.

A closed system, continued

In regards to the end of the world or repeating cycles…

If the air I breathe is made of the the same basic elements as the air the dinosaurs breathed, has anything really changed in the last 65 million years of our [essentially] closed environment of a solar system?

If I see a gun as a tool rather than as a deadly weapon, why should I change perspectives when others tell me from their perspective that a gun is or has been used against them as a deadly weapon?

What cultural signposts are you paying attention to?

From what theoretical distance?

What makes yet another skyscraper any different than (or different from) the mountains from which their elements were mined?

A chipmunk, like generations before it, scampers along the edge of the wooden deck next to the house, staying hidden from predators while looking for food, watched by me like countless others, except this time recorded on an iPad in a fabricated sunroom attached to a wood-sided house in a designed subdivision of a suburban tract near a local metropolitan area.

The chipmunk has no knowledge of what makes the sound in the sky above, a propellor-driven airplane above the low afternoon clouds, but has more of a clue about the set of states of energy we call a cardinal that is chirping nearby.

What does our current round of civilisation-building have that previous builders did not?

A chipmunk does not have to justify its actions using the same nesting and food material available to it as to its ancestors, the landscape changing shape with weather conditions and the actions of nearby species such as us, cardinals, squirrels, snails, mosquitoes, and the most recent visitors, armadillos.

Why do we spend so much time justifying our actions in regards to our use of the bounties of harvest?

What makes our civilisation special, better or worse than previous ones?

The illusion of a view from the future might tell us what, why and when…
