A geriatric medical specialist shared with me a common health issue for older women:

• UTI, or urinary tract infection.

The specialist said the number one cause for UTI appears to be the way the women clear fecal material after having a BM, or bowel movement.

Those who tend to suffer from UTI wipe toilet tissue from back to front, which gets fecal material in the vaginal area and allows fecal-borne organisms like E. coli to enter the urinary tract.

He wondered if there should be a campaign to instruct mothers to teach their daughters to wipe from front to back, so that, when the daughters are older, their toilet habits will keep them healthier.
